Notable Episodes From Classic Star TrekDevil in the Dark, Friday's Child, Mirror Mirror and Shore Leave
Star Trek episodes are noted for suspense, drama, action and intrigue, but whether intentional or accidental, sometimes they showed something a little more interesting.
Many episodes of the classic Star Trek contain gaffs, goofs and even some intentional gags. While there are literally dozens of intentionally humorous and accidentally funny moments to choose from, here are four particularly notable comedic moments: Devil in the DarkKirk and the crew are summoned to a mining planet to deal with a monster that is killing the miners. When Spock and Kirk find themselves confronted by the wounded creature, Spock uses the Vulcan mind meld to communicate with it and learns that it is a mother defending her eggs, not a murderous monster. The episode is notable for McCoy's exclamation, "I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!" Friday's ChildOn a mission to a planet where McCoy once spent time, an encounter with Klingons puts Kirk, McCoy and the very pregnant wife of one of the leaders of the tribe they're negotiating with on the run into the hills. During their run for their lives, McCoy must not only care for the pregnant woman, but also keep her from giving up her own life and the life of her child in the name of honour. Notable for another McCoy exclamation, "I'm a doctor, not an escalator!" Mirror, MirrorA transporter accident sends Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura into a parallel universe where bad is good and goatees are all the rage. The mirror crew is bent on battle and destruction, similar to the Klingon race in the normal universe. Spock, however, is still a logical Vulcan and takes Kirk's suggestion to seize power and right the wrongs of the empire before allowing the four interlopers to escape back to their own universe. Notable for Spock's goatee and the fact that the mirror Sulu wears the red tunic in this episode which makes him the only cast member to have worn all three department colours during the show's three year original run. Mirror, Mirror is also the famous episode where a stage hand's hand can be seen opening the door behind McCoy and Scotty as they drag an unconscious guard through it. Shore LeaveThe Enterprise orbits a planet that is seemingly devoid of intelligent life, however within minutes of beaming down, crew members start seeing odd things like characters from Alice in Wonderland and knights in shining armor. It turns out that the planet was designed as a pleasure planet and a persons thoughts are instantly brought to life, for entertainment purposes only. Notable for the infamous massage scene during which Kirk assumes that Spock is rubbing his back and seems oddly disturbed when he sees that it is actually a woman doing the massaging.
